The CareerWorks Healthcare Training Institute welcomes Linda Jaskowiak as HTI Director!

Thanks to a specially designed healthcare training program, Renee was able to pay rent and other bills, while completing training as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).  The program was designed by the Milwaukee Area Healthcare Alliance (MAHA), a partnership between the YWCA of Greater Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Area Health Education Center (Milwaukee AHEC).
The training was designed in response to the needs articulated by local employers like Stowell Associates/Select Staff, who worked with MAHA throughout the program’s design and implementation.  In addition to the CNA curriculum, the training included coaching on career readiness and success, as well as an overview of career pathways in healthcare.
By creatively blending public and private funding streams, MAHA was able to offer program participants much needed stipends during the six week training.  A $75,000 grant from the United Way’s Employment and Training Initiative helped cover the cost of drug testing, transportation, scrubs, shoes and other equipment and materials needed for training, in addition to providing the $155/week stipend. Public funding from the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) covered the instructional costs.
Lisa Boyd-Gonzalez, COO of the YWCA, reflects that “This was a wonderful opportunity to bring together public and private funding sources to nurture success.  We often forget the struggles that individuals face daily in meeting some of life’s most basic needs.  This project allowed us to put together a training partnership that met those needs, demonstrating an increased likelihood of program retention and positive placement outcomes.”
The results were impressive:  10 out of 11 participants in the first class successfully completed the training; 10 out the 10 who took the CNA certification exam passed; to date, 7 of 10 have found employment as CNAs – including Renee who says “I’m glad I did the program. I’m already using a lot of what I learned to care for my mother who suffers from bone loss.  Besides all of the technical and academic things I learned in the CNA training program, I’ve learned you can do anything you put your mind to.”

The CareerWorks Healthcare Training Institute welcomes Linda Jaskowiak as HTI Director!  Linda started her higher education in nursing, but changed her direction and earned her degree in education. She has bridged her two passions and has worked in healthcare education for the last 17 years.  In her last job she created a state approved training program for CNAs.  Prior to that she was a career college director and before that she successfully managed a healthcare training center for 11 years.  Linda enjoys empowering people to believe in themselves and attain their career potential. She is looking forward to leading the HTI staff to successfully assist participants in being all they can be not only for themselves, but for the healthcare community they will serve.
